About Us

Our company is based on the belief that our customers' needs are very important. Our commitment is to meeting those needs. As a result, a high percentage of our business is from repeat customers and referrals. We believe in the quality and purity of our products..

As  a trainied masseur,  aromatherapist and physiology, nutrition, oils and what they are beneficial for and of course the effect massage has on the body

I had always been interested in food, nutrition and skin care. In a long and winding road have been led here

FAIR TRADE

Our products are fairly-traded and ethical too. The womens cooperative who make the shea work extremely hard and they have a lot of respect for the shea. It goes through its final 'packaging' here where we only sell it off the wrapped in biodegradable compostable paper and raffia, in order to keep the integrity of the product. We pay a fair price for a worthy product to worthy hard working men and women.

Frequently Asked Question

“In this day and age, it’s hard to find a company you can trust. Shea Geniius was recommended to me by a friend, and now I know why – the quality of service I received was outstanding. Keep up the good work!”

Customer, London

As you can imagine we get asked all sorts of question about the product and about the business. Over the last three years of this business we have noted that some question are asked repeatedly by all sorts of people. So this ts the start of some of those questions and their answers.

Q.   I HAVE SEEN SHEA BUTTER FOR SALE AT FOOD SHOPS IN LITTLE PLASTIC BAGS OR PLASTIC TUBS.

A . Plastic bag is not ideal for pure organic shea butter particulates will combine with the chemicals in the plastic. This highly underrated natural product is much better in a natural eco-friendly packaging or container. such as glass. we wrap purs on paper.  yes paper!  We make our other products mostly in glass or certified safe plastics.

Q. WHY IS YOUR SHEA BUTTER SO EXPENSIVE! WE CAN BUY IT FROM THESE PLACES FOR UNDER £3.OO.

A. As always it depends what you are getting as Shea butter. I went through a rough time with the business and made a bad decision to buy some of the shea from these place one had a wholesale warehouse. The shea butter was dirty and gritty, clearly in some cases out of date and in other cases had been blended with what seems to be vegetable oil! I finally found a trusted source here in the UK. (very expensive) However the shea from our women s coop is the highest grade and very pure and fresh.  Our prices our fair for the quality and freshness you get and  is actually reasonably priced compared with big brand companies.. Your comparing us with the wrong people and wrong quality of product. And I know you only get a small amount for that price less than my small size for £6.00. (which has been that price sin 2011!

Q. CAN SHEA BUTTER GET RID OF STRETCH MARKS

A. Stretch marks have degrees of intensity of damage to the skin. The skin scarring is also from inside your body and causes a 'tearing;' look to the skin, it is much more difficult to get rid of. You can expect it to take longer and sometimes it will only reduce the scars. But certainly you have a much better chance with shea butter. Expect 6 months to 2 years.of regular use. Prevent it by using shea as a daily moisturiser! Some people never get them - Lucky people!!

Q. I DON'T LIKE THE SMELL.

A. This is a strange one as 99% of people who smell pure organic shea butter love it. Saying it smells like white chocolate, or aniseed, or woody. More common people don't like its thick richness because they are used to light lotions (which are actually mostly water)  . Some have had the unfortunate experience of using badly made shea butter or shea that has gone rancid. . We do make body butters that have delicious natural fragrances. If you prefer.

Q. WHY ARE SOME BODY BUTTERS WHIPPED.

A It makes it softer fluffier and adds air! so in fact you get less shea butter becuase the container is bulked up with air.

Q. WHAT IS SHEA BUTTER AND WHY IS IT CALLED BUTTER.

A. shea is a fruit. Tthe seed from this fruit is what is, through a long process, made into the butter. Its called butter simply because of its consistency and colour. Also it is used by some people in Africa to cook with.

Q. CAN WE EAT YOUR SHEA BUTTER

A. Our pure organic shea butter is of edible quality although we only sell it a s a cosmetic. We cannot take responsibility for outcome if you choose to try some on your toast as one of our customer does!

Q. WHY IS SHEA BUTTER USED IN SO MANY COSMETIC PRODUCTS.

A Simply because it is a fantastic skin care product. Sadly you do not always get quality ingredients or you only get a small proportion of shea or worse you get chemicals added to it that actaully harm you in short and long term use.

Q. SHOULD I REFRIDGERATE THE SHEA BUTTER

A. This wrong information has got around about how to store shea. Refrigeration actually damages it!. It needs to be kept at room temperature.

Q. DOES IT DRY OUT

A. No. Not even without a lid on.

Q . HOW LONG DOES SHEA KEEP FOR.

A. Up to 2 years. We only sell fresh shea butter. So you can expect it to last for two years However each of our batch from our women makers batch last us for 6 months so we always put a best before date of just over one year on it.

Q ITS A BIT GREASY AND THICK AND MY SKIN IS A BIT OILY

A. Shea does not leave a greasy residue or shine. Although it feels thick and rich its absorbed thoroughly - even for oily skin. Try using straight after bath or shower when it absorbs better

Q. WHERE DOES SHEA COME FROM.

Ours come from Northern Ghana a lovely little town called Tamale. The shea tree grows throughout the Sahal of West and East Africa. It grows wild so it is organic by default. Shea is made from the seed of the fruits.

Q I AM SENSITIVE TO NUTS CAN SHEA BE A PROBLEM FOR ME.

A. Shea butter is Hypo-Allergenic. The seed is not classified as a nut. However people can be allergic to almost anything. Shea is gentle enough to be used even on a new born baby. There is a small possibility of a reaction if you have a poor quality shea so only by from crtified suppliers, o if you r have a latex allergy as shea has a latex like property at very low levels.

Q. A WHAT IS LATEX

A Latex is a milky substance found in a small percentage of plant products including trees. It thickens to create a rubber extracted from the tree There is also artificial (plastic). You can be allergic to both or one and not the other.

Q.  ARE THERE OTHER PLANTS AND HERBS FROM AFRICA THAT ARE GOOD

A Oh Yes. Argon oil (Sometimes known as Moroccan oil as that is the particular region of Africa that it comes from) The Ylang Ylang, Marula, Roobois, Frankincense Myrrh,  Eternal Moringa Mangon seed (also known as the Manketti, this grows only in the Kalahari desert of Africa) and the mighty  Boabab are just some. We use some in our Amazing body oil,

Boabab trees (The upside-down tree).  The shea and Boabab are known  as the tree of life. More common ones are Mango Coconut pawpaw, Vanilla  (some of which grow right around tropical world)

Q.  IS YOUR SHEA BUTTER FAIR TRADE.

We are in contact with the Fair Trade Association, but as yet we do not buy their shea butter. We prefer to say we are fairly traded, as we pay what the makers ask not wishing to negotiate lower prices. Fair Trade shea butter is available from Bakino Faso and we are looking at getting supplies this from this region in the future.  Bokino Faso borders with Northern Ghana which is where we get our shea butter now.

Q. ARE YOU MEMBER OF ANY ORGANISATIONS

Yes. a member of  S oaps makers  Association, Federation of Holisitc Therapts and The Global Shea Alliance. This protects you and me.

Q. WHY DO YOU SPELL GENIUS WITH TWO I's IN YOUR COMPANY NAME

A. I initially I remember saying  "This is sheer genius!" when I researched shea and after I had cured me of my athletes' foot. (I had tried many other things unsuccessfully)  I am a little dyslexic but this is a deliberate thing. It was going to be Shea Genii (as in Genii in a bottle the mythological Arabic/Egyptian figure)) we learned that the word genii is the PLURAL of genius. So we thought it would be a clever twist to put the two words together. Also, it sounds like the expression "sheer genius!" which shea butter is.

Q, SHE BUTTER SOUNDS LIKE A CURE FOR EVERYTHING BUT SOME SKIN PROBLEMS ARE INTERNAL

A. Right. Some due to hormonal changes as in teenage spots but diet is so important. Good Food and sleep is the greatest healer. We don't eat just to keep alive. We eat to keep well and healthy and we enjoy food which makes us happy and that in itself produces cortizones (the happiness hormone) which strengthens our immune system . And we will have good skin if we eat well. avoid refined foods like white flower in bread pastries and pizzas and pies. avoid refined food like corned flakes and rice crisps and white rice. (I know its eaten by millions over the world but its not the best type of rice). Packet foods like hot dogs that are full of chemicals and preservatives and very little nutrition and packet processed food. and finally those fast chicken and burgers.places Some Cafes and inexpensive restaurants serve better food.than these places.

Home cooked food, freshly cooked foods using fresh ingredients with fresh herbs and spices (DIRED IS GOOD TOO) even if they are pies or burger) are much better. No chemicals and no additives! Bread is easy to make and has only four ingredients (commercial bread can have up to TWENTY!)  Eat fruit and vegetables and eat some raw, have whole grain organic food and lots of fresh fish etc, Eat less meat and eat organic. Eat a wide variety of nuts. Finally, seed oils are fantastic for your skin. (Can be added to salads). and only drink fresh juices and water. No fizzy sugary drinks. Bags of crisps pizza fast food chicken places etc etc.

But then you can care for skin on a daily basis on the outside with the best skincare ever - SHEA BUTTER and other natural organic beneficial oils.  Yes its true SOMETIMES IT IS GENETICS.  YOU SEE A WHOLE FAMILY WITH GOOD SKIN AND VICE VERSA.

Q MY HUSBAND WANTS TO KNOW IF HE CAN SHAVE WITH SHEA BUTTER.

A, He can. It is the perfect medium to rub  excess amount over the face then as the body warms it creates al cream to shave with. As it does not leave a greasy shine by the time he is finished there will only be a tiny residue of shea on his face acting as a perfect balm. Alternatively, he can shave with the African Black soap with has a rich lather and then use a small amount of shea as a balm after.

Q CAN YOU EVER EAT THOSE 'BAD' FOODS

A. Why would you want to? Honestly save your money. However, they are only bad for you if they are part of your daily diet. good food is tasty bad food has its tastes artificially created. Also, you might have the temperament of eating one and wanting more and more because the chemicals and flavoring even the smells are addictive. A habit some find hard to break. Once in a very long while I suppose is ok. But that's like saying it's ok to have a little tiny bit of poison once in a while!? Ultimately you make daily decisions yourself.

Q ARE YOU GOING TO DO GIFT PACKS

A Yes. its a long time coming but  STARTED LAST YEAR. We finally got it.  it requires a lot of planning and to bring it all together.  A gift pack in a African print wash bag. with a collection of goodies you choose from our range. Watch out for it.

Q I LOVE YOUR SOAPS - BUT THEY HAVE CHANGED

A We are changing them and improving all the time. Hand made products are never exactly the same each batch changes. ..Oooh  We will be getting new fresh soaps.  there are a million designs and combinations but will select 12 regular designs and add a few new limited edition ones now and again.

Q. SHEA IS A BIT HEAVY FOR DAY TIME USE I WANT TO USE IT AT NIGHT.

A That's fine some, people do. However you will be surprised, it is not actually heavy or thick just appears that way. |In fact it provides you with perfect protection for your skin through the day - from head to feet. It does however help you retain moisture in your skin so can make you a little sweaty in the hot summer.

Q YOU DONT HAVE A SKIN CARE RANGE

A Yes your right. That was 4 years ago.  We do now and it's growing all the time. Our focus was on creating formulas for all. We are still doing that.

Q SOME BIG COSMETIC COMPANIES ARE MAKING A 'NATURAL RANGE'

Arrh! Yes its called brand wagoning  or greenwashing.  Ok looks good to add natural even organic ingredients toa product that's still bad base products. Some companies still keep their 'damaging' (SEE INGREDIENTS) range and have a natural organic range as a side line.  Sometimes the organic ingredients have not been certified and you can use the word ORGANIC as a brand name too. Good marketing ploy and sells - making them millions. Check the ingredients thoroughly. However, natural organic ingredients are the future. Finally, organic or herbal ingredients can be less than 2%

Q Are the orders individually made up

Yes. We sometimes get some from stock that have been made previously but mostly everything is made from scratch for every customer..  We are now building up stock for some range of products as this helps with speed of delive
